Preparing for Placement

Several things can affect the amount of time new foster parents wait to receive their first placement. These include the number of children needing placement in the area and the age range and gender of children the foster parents were approved to care for.

Most children are placed during non-traditional hours and with little notice. Children often come into care with very few items. Below is a list of suggested items to have on hand in preparation for a placement:

  • Toothbrushes/deodorant
  • Hair care products (ribbons, combs, brushes)
  • Diapers/underwear
  • Night-lights
  • Sleeping outfits
  • Toys
  • Kid friendly snacks and meal plan
