State steps up efforts in recruiting more foster parents

Governor Proclaims Foster Care Month in Georgia

ATLANTA – On any given day there are approximately 15,000 children in foster care in Georgia – children who find themselves in state’s care because of abuse and/or neglect. Governor Sonny Perdue is designating the month of May as "Foster Care Month in Georgia," and local DFCS offices throughout the state are stepping up campaigns to recruit more foster parents. To officially kick off Foster Care Month in Georgia, Gov. Perdue, a former foster parent, will hold a signing ceremony Thursday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the State Capitol Building on the steps of the Rotunda.

The need for foster parents in Georgia is great. Currently there are approximately 4,200 active foster homes in the state but more families are needed to care for the 15,000 children currently living in foster care.

"Foster parenting is a rewarding, awesome responsibility and foster families often share with us that there’s no better gift than watching a child blossom and thrive under their care," said DFCS State Director Mary Dean Harvey. "Their strong, guiding influence cannot be overstated."

Harvey also explained that the overwhelming majority of DFCS adoptions are by foster parents, another critical reason to recruit more foster parents on an ongoing basis. There is a particular and growing need for individuals to foster teens, children of sibling groups and children with physical and/or emotional disabilities.

Throughout May DFCS county offices across the state are sponsoring foster parent appreciation activities, family activities, information fairs, seminars and training sessions.
