Personal Responsibility and Education Program (PREP)

On March 23, 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law. This Act amended Title V of the Social Security Act to include a new grant program titled: the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP). The purpose of PREP is to enable states to support personal responsibility education programs that positively change the behavior of youth (e.g., delaying sexual activity, increasing condom and/or contraceptive use or reducing pregnancy).

PREP is funded by the Administration of Children and Families’ Family and Youth Services Bureau. Georgia’s PREP is administered by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Georgia PREP is designed to educate youth on both abstinence and contraception for the prevention of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The program targets youth ages 10 to 19 who are: in foster care, live in rural areas or in geographic areas with high teen birth rates or come from racial or ethnic minority groups. The program also supports pregnant and parenting teens under age 21. In addition to reducing and preventing teen pregnancy and STIs, the program also assists youth in becoming healthy, responsible, self-sufficient adults by educating them on healthy relationships, adolescent development, financial literacy, parent-child communication, educational and career preparation, and healthy life skills.

Georgia’s Personal Responsibility Education Program (GA-PREP) is pleased to host a series of 2-day training designed to help adults become a “Connected Caregiver.” These training have been designed specifically for foster parents, CCI and CPA caregivers, case managers and supervisors. This year Georgia PREP will be hosting two Connected Caregiver Trainings. Through funding from the DHS/DFCS PREP program, these trainings are being offered for FREE to the first 50 registrants. Registration information will be released soon. Check back for updates!
